Why dental health is so important

Dental health is a major part of your overall health. Many dental conditions can affect other organs in the body. Taking care of your oral health improves your chances of maintaining long term overall wellness.

Studies show that bacteria in the mouth may contribute to problems involving the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other systems. Oral health is also closely connected to diabetes. When periodontal disease is present, managing diabetes becomes more difficult. This relationship works both ways, meaning caring for your mouth can have a meaningful impact on the rest of your body.

What a healthy dental routine looks like

A strong daily routine includes brushing, flossing, and using a water pick after breakfast. This helps keep your mouth clean as you go about your day.

Brushing again after lunch and dinner is ideal. Plaque can remain on teeth for hours if it is not removed. Brushing after meals helps protect your teeth and gums.

The most important time to brush is before bed. While you sleep, bacteria continue to grow and feed on plaque left behind. Be sure to brush, floss, use a water pick, and brush your tongue before bedtime. The tongue has small surface structures that trap bacteria, which can spread back to the teeth if not cleaned.

Mouth rinse may be used at the end of your routine if desired. This entire process takes only a few minutes and can prevent significant dental problems over time.

Most common dental problems

The most common dental issues we see include cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, broken teeth, and dental pain that is often related to infection. These are the concerns we address most frequently in our practice.

How long a full dental exam takes

A complete dental exam typically takes about one hour and thirty minutes. This allows us to gather all necessary records such as images and photos, review your concerns, and explain treatment options clearly.

How often you should visit the dentist

Most patients benefit from a dental exam at least once per year. Patients with ongoing concerns may benefit from exams twice per year.

Cleanings are commonly recommended every six months for healthy patients. Patients who need additional care may benefit from visits every three to four months. Other treatments are addressed as needed and followed by a regular care schedule.
