Many dental concerns start quietly—mild bleeding, lingering bad taste, or gum sensitivity—and then progress over time. At Diamond Dental Arts, we help patients identify early warning signs and create a clear plan. Below is a general overview of several common conditions we evaluate in the office.

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum inflammation. It often shows up as bleeding during brushing or flossing, tenderness, puffiness, or gums that look redder than usual. In many cases, it starts when plaque sits along the gumline and irritates the tissue.
The good news is that gingivitis is often reversible with improved home care and professional cleanings. If inflammation is ignored, it can progress into deeper gum problems that are harder to treat.
“Gum disease” is a broad term that includes gingivitis and more advanced conditions. When gum tissue stays inflamed for a long time, it can begin to pull away from the teeth and create spaces where bacteria collect more easily. This can lead to persistent bad breath, gum recession, or teeth that feel sensitive near the gumline.
Treatment depends on what we find during your exam. Some situations improve with consistent cleanings and home-care coaching, while others need deeper therapy to remove bacteria below the gumline.
Periodontal disease is a more advanced stage where infection affects the supporting structures around the teeth. Over time, the bone that holds teeth in place can weaken. Patients may notice gum recession, shifting teeth, bleeding, or discomfort when chewing.
Our focus is to reduce infection, stabilize the gums, and protect the bone support around the teeth. Ongoing maintenance visits and daily home care are essential to keep periodontal disease under control.
Oral cancer screening is a routine part of many dental exams. The purpose is to check the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat area for changes that don’t look normal. Early detection can make a meaningful difference.
If you ever notice a sore that does not heal, a persistent lump, ongoing hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained changes in the tissues of your mouth, schedule an evaluation so we can assess it.
The simplest protection comes from consistency: brush gently along the gumline twice daily, floss once daily, and keep up with routine dental visits so we can remove buildup you can’t reach at home.
Lifestyle factors also matter. Tobacco products increase oral health risks, and dry mouth can make gum and tooth problems more likely. If you frequently feel dry, we can recommend strategies to improve comfort and reduce risk.
Call us if you notice frequent bleeding, swollen gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, mouth sores that don’t resolve, or pain when chewing. Many conditions are easier to treat when caught early.
