What is a dental filling

A filling is a restoration used when a tooth has a cavity or a small damaged area. We remove the decayed portion so it can’t continue spreading, and that leaves a space in the tooth. A filling material is placed to rebuild the tooth, seal it, and restore normal function.

Can fillings be avoided

Often, yes—especially when we catch things early. Fillings are needed after decay has started, so prevention is the real key. Consistent brushing and flossing, regular checkups, and smart diet choices (less frequent sugar and acidic snacks) can significantly reduce your risk of cavities.

Professional cleanings also matter because they remove hardened buildup (tartar) that brushing at home can’t remove. When plaque and tartar stay on teeth too long, the risk of decay increases.

Do fillings require drilling

Once a cavity is present, the decayed tooth structure must be removed completely. That typically requires dental instruments that gently clean the area before the tooth can be restored. The goal is to remove the unhealthy portion and keep as much strong tooth structure as possible.

Why removing decay matters

If decay is left behind, it can continue progressing under the filling. A properly cleaned and sealed filling helps stop the cavity process and protects the tooth.

Can fillings match tooth color

Yes. Tooth-colored fillings can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth. We select the material and shade based on where the tooth is located and what will look the most natural in your smile.

Does getting a filling hurt

A filling appointment should be comfortable. We numb the tooth and surrounding area before treatment so you don’t feel pain during the procedure. If you ever feel sensitivity during the visit, let us know and we will adjust anesthesia to keep you comfortable.

What to do after a filling

Most patients go right back to their normal routine. You can brush and floss as usual, and you can eat normally once numbness wears off. It’s common to have mild sensitivity for a short time, especially to cold, but it usually settles quickly.

If your bite feels “high” or uneven after a filling, call us. A simple adjustment can make it feel perfect again.

Do fillings need to be replaced

Not always. Many fillings last for years when the tooth stays healthy and clean. However, fillings can wear down, chip, or develop leakage at the edges over time. Also, if the original cause of decay isn’t corrected, new cavities can form around the filling.

Regular exams help us monitor fillings early so small issues don’t become bigger problems.

How much a filling costs

The cost depends on the size of the cavity, the location of the tooth, and how many surfaces are involved. A small filling is different from a larger restoration that rebuilds more of the tooth. During your exam, we will explain what’s needed and review options before treatment begins.

When to schedule an appointment

If you notice sensitivity, pain when chewing, a rough spot, or a dark area that looks suspicious, schedule an exam as soon as possible. Some cavities do not hurt at first, which is why routine yearly exams and twice-yearly cleanings are so important.

If you have any questions about fillings or think you may need treatment, call or text our office. We’re happy to help and we’ll explain everything clearly.
